Can I get an extension for paying bail on eligible citations?

If you have been cited for a traffic violation, you can, in some circumstances, get an extension for paying bail on eligible moving violations. An extension is a postponement of the original due date on the citation.

For example, if you are charged with a traffic violation in the Los Angeles area, the Superior Court will give you one 60-day extension to pay the bail on the eligible citation if you are not required to show up for a mandatory court date. You have to ensure that you pay the bail within 60 days as the court will not allow any further extensions after the period has elapsed. However, the length of time that will be accorded really depends on your offense and the state and county in which you fall.

The first thing to do in order to request a bail extension is to contact your local court either by letter, telephone, in person or on the court’s website. Since each county has its own set of rules, it is best to contact the respective county to find out which methods they use. Finding out the correct procedures for obtaining an extension on eligible citations will go a long way toward ensuring success. If you do not follow the right steps, then your extension request can be turned down flat and you will have to pay the bail as required.

Generally extensions are given on bail when you have informed the court that you are planning to attend a traffic school. The time of the extension is normally in accordance with the time required to complete the course and rectify your driving record. However, there are other reasons for extending your bail payment including a lack of funds and the contest of a violation.
