What to look for in your search for a driving instructor?

Finding a good driving instructor is as important as attending the right driving school. Your instructor is the person who will be sitting in the car with you as you set off in quest of a driver’s license. It is what your driving instructor imparts to you that will stick with you longest after you have acquired your driver’s permit. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance for you to have confidence in the person who will be your instructor. There are a few things that will help you to assess whether the instructors on your short list are qualified or not. Here is a basic guide on what to look for in a driving instructor.

The driving instructor you hire should be a fully qualified ADI – Approved Driving Instructor. In order to get such a designation, instructors must pass a series of rigorous tests that prepare them for instructing others. Find out for how long they have had their ADI qualification, as those with recent certification might have less experience than others, but might also have a better grasp of new driving techniques and strategies.

If you have friends or colleagues who have just had to take driving lessons ask them who their instructor was and how they would rank him/her. Recommendations are an excellent way of finding a good driving instructor and of weeding out the bad seeds.

Driving test pass rates
One of the best ways of assessing the competence of a driving instructor is through their driving test pass rates. Instructors with high pass rates are always more in demand than those with low pass rates.

Naturally, cost will play a factor when it comes to choosing a driving instructor. However, it is best to not focus entirely on the cost. If an instructor has very high test pass rates and a good recommendation, then they are more likely to charge more – but it is money well invested.

When choosing a driving instructor, make sure that you feel comfortable with the person and that you trust them. After all, you will be spending a lot of time behind the wheel with them and at the end, you need to know that you will pass your driving test.
