How often am I eligible to take traffic school for a given traffic citation?

Many counties only allow you to take traffic school once every eighteen to thirty-six months. Generally the date is calculated from when the citation is issued and not when you begin traffic school.

You may be able to attend traffic school a second time within eighteen months but you must ask permission from the judge to allow it. If you receive an additional citation within eighteen months, the courts may still assign a date for traffic school. Why is that? The courts have a wide discretion and judges may allow you attend traffic school again. If the judge refuses to allow you to attend traffic school again, you can always contest your citation; this has the added impact of costing the legal system more money in overtime for court employees. The Judge may just prefer to have you pay the additional fees and allow you to attend traffic school again.

Being allowed to attend traffic school again within the eighteen month period will prevent your insurance company from being able to raise your premiums. Even if the violation is visible to the insurance company, the law only allows them to raise your premium if you are found guilty of the violation.

So, the first course of action when you receive a citation is to find out whether you are eligible to enrol in an online traffic school – even if you have already taken a traffic course in the last eighteen months. The advantages far outweigh the consequences of not even trying.
