Is texting and driving illegal in California?

With so many getting into major car accidents and even deaths, is texting and driving illegal in California? There isn't a single day that I don't see at least one teenager who is texting while driving without paying any attention to the road or the signs!

There has been a ban on texting and driving in California since January 2009.
The same ban also applied to sending emails or browsing the web whiling driving but OK to input directions into your phone's GPS.

Even if it is legal, texting and driving should be on your NOT TO DO list while driving!!!
I see so many ER injuries from car accidents due to texting while driving and they are mostly teenagers

I wish the fines were much stiffer. It's basically a slap on the wrist if you get caught texting or even talking on the phone. The kids these days are bad enough drivers, but using the phone on top of it?? Please do the right thing and don't do it either!
